Speaker: Gail McGarva

Talk Title - Stories and Songs of the Sea

Saturday 14th December 2019

Gail will be telling the story of how her journey into boatbuilding all began, her passion for her craft and the story of a motherboat and daughterboat from Dorset’s Chesil Beach.

The talk will be followed by a performance of original songs of the sea sung by trio Penny Dunscombe, Gail McGarva and Diana Takezoe. The songs have been written by Gail with harmony arrangements by Penny.

About the speaker

Gail McGarva is a traditional wooden boatbuilder with a passion for preserving the lineage of working boats in danger of extinction. Her specialism is the building of replicas or as she prefers to call them 'daughterboats' breathing life into a new generation of these traditional craft. They are not static museum pieces but expressions of living history celebrating the stories all boats have to tell about their communities and their shores.
Gail has been awarded a British Empire Medal for her services to traditional boatbuilding and heritage crafts.
