Speaker: Jaz O'Hara, founder of The Worldwide Tribe

The Worldwide Tribe is an organisation and online community that works to raise awareness about the refugee crisis, developed by Jaz O'Hara after a Facebook post Jaz wrote about her first trip to the Calais Jungle (in July 2015) went viral.

The Worldwide Tribe has developed since then in its mission to highlight the humanity behind world issues, inspire global community and leave a legacy of positive, social change; it operates with the firm belief that the world is getting smaller, and aims to connect people all over the globe in one community of international citizens creating a truly world wide tribe.

The Worldwide Tribe has run and invested grassroots projects that make a direct difference to the lives of those in need such as installing wifi in camps in France and Greece, organising a football tournament in Dunkirk, funding a fire truck in Calais, running art projects in Za'atari camp in Jordan, supporting a Search and Rescue in the Mediterranean, coordinating food, clothing, shelter and much, much more.

Jaz and her team are dedicated to challenging the fear-based narrative of much of today's media and society using creative storytelling via social media to bring a personal, human perspective to the issues that people want to know about.

About the speaker:

After visiting the Jungle camp in Calais in August 2015, Jaz wrote a raw, emotional post about the experience her personal Facebook page. The post went viral, with over 65,000 shares, reaching millions of people.

What followed was an immense outpouring of support, with thousands of people reaching out wanting to donate, volunteer and help. Jaz found herself at the forefront of a grassroots movement, which saw the organic creation of her organisation and online community, The Worldwide Tribe. This powerful community went on to have huge direct, positive impact on the ground.

The time Jaz spent in refugee camps across Europe and the Middle East has allowed her to build relationships, form friendships and gain a level of trust that enables her to give an unprecedented, intimate perspective of this crisis. Her aim is to bring a voice to those who need to be heard, all across the world.

Jaz uses creative storytelling to highlight the humanity of this crisis, with a focus on the hope, love, compassion and unity that she has been lucky enough to experience. Through words, photography, film and art,  she is inspiring people to take action and to use their own skills and experience to be the change they wish to see in the world.
