S&C: A LOT OF RUBBISH IS BEING TALKED ABOUT PLASTICS

Everyone has gone bonkers about plastic - suggesting the most crazy solutions to the problem of our wasteful society. Even the government are at it, with the idea, for example, of 'plastic-free' aisles in supermarkets. Plastics can be the best environmental option - in some cases better than glass or even paper. Come for a talk and discussion to find out what makes sense - and what doesn't.

About the speaker:

Julia Hailes is a sustainability pioneer with over 30 years in the green sector. Julia is a campaigner, writer, speaker and consultant and has written or co-written, nine environmental books, including The Green Consumer Guide, which sold over 1 million copies worldwide.

Julia is passionate about reducing waste; she has sat on the boards of the Packaging Standards Authority, Waste Watch and Keep Britain Tidy -  and has advised many companies on packaging issues, including Marks & Spencer and Procter & Gamble. In 2011 she co-founded E for Good, an organisation campaigning on E-waste (electrical and electronic waste) and in 2017 she chaired a panel discussion at the Royal Geographic Society focusing on how our society can reduce plastic waste.

Julia is currently working with CHASE Africa promoting family planning, concentrating on work in conservation areas. Her work in Africa over several decades has led to a huge concern over the growing waste problem in developing countries, where there are numerous places with no waste management facilities at all. In 1992 Julia received a UN Global 500 Award for Outstanding Environmental Achievement.
