Join Trill Farm’s market gardener Ashley for a day learning about the techniques and crop plans that enable him and his partner to grow around 3 tonnes of salad each year.

This day will cover:

  • Which varieties to grow (and choosing varieties for certain times of year)
  • Propagation and bed preparation
  • Planting, spacing and harvesting
  • Crop planning and record keeping
  • How best to avoid pests and disease
  • Marketing and presentation of your produce

The day will also include a tour of the garden to show how salad growing fits into the whole growing system.

This course is suitable for both experienced small scale salad growers as well as those who are thinking of starting a market garden and want to learn more about how to produce and sell salad all year.

Much of the course will be based outdoors. Suitable boots and waterproofs are required.

Course Tutor: Ashley Wheeler

Ashley has run Trill Farm Garden with his partner Kate for the last 8 years. Bought up on an organic smallholding, he learnt a huge amount from his parents who ran a box scheme in the 1990's. After his Horticulture degree at Reading University he and Kate came across the opportunity at Trill Farm to rent 2.5 acres to run their own market gardening business. They now sell salad and other vegetables and herbs to around 15 different restaurants, cafes and caterers almost all within 5 miles of the farm.
