The Austrian scythe is a versatile and precise tool, widely considered essential for the modern landworker. Invaluable on smallholdings, wildflower meadows and in place of strimmers and petrol mowers.

On the course you will learn the foundational skills necessary to get going confidently with the scythe, this includes:

  • A brief history of the scythe
  • How to set up the scythe to fit your body    
  • Safety
  • Mowing techniques
  • Sharpening
  • Maintenance of the blade
  • Tips on meadow and grass management

This is a fun day packed full of information. You will leave with a new skill to practice, feeling confident to use the scythe safely and efficiently and it may just revolutionise the way you manage your land.


Course Leader

Fiona Pollock ran the herb garden at Trill Farm in 2019. Now based in Somerset, she is returning to Trill Farm to share her expertise in scything. Fiona is a member of The Scythe Association of Britain and Ireland (SABI) As a professional land worker, finding the Austrian scythe 8 years ago was a revelation. It made previously dreaded tasks not only possible but possible with ease and joy. She was empowered to work sensitively and in harmony with the land and has been devoted to sharing her knowledge and experience of this magical tool ever since.
